Why is being a friend so difficult now?
Sometimes, I feel like something is missing from my life. It feels like I lost something important, but I can’t remember what it was.
When I talk to someone face-to-face, I realize that I miss interaction and real conversation. As a child, meeting friends was normal. I had many friends, siblings, and cousins. As I grew older, my friendships became deeper and more meaningful.
However, things have changed. Now, we talk to many people online at the same time on different platforms or in chat groups. We send jokes and pictures, but we don’t really talk much.
Even though the world is connected, it feels disconnected. Communication is faster, but it often feels empty. We scroll through our phones and connect with people randomly. We don’t need to go out to be entertained because we have Netflix. But meeting friends has become harder because of the cancel culture. Many people cancel plans to watch shows at home.
If we don’t meet face-to-face, we don’t feel as guilty about canceling. A sad emoji is easier than saying we are really disappointed.
I think about leaving social media, but I worry about how my friends will reach me. However, true friends will always find a way to stay in touch. I hope I can do the same.
