Tips for work safety in a car workshop
• Be aware of risks. If you know the particular hazards of your workplace, you can reduce the risk of work-related injuries or illnesses for yourself and your co-workers.
• Keep work areas clean and well organised. Keep tools in good order and clear walkways of possible obstructions.
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when working. Gear such as hard hats, safety goggles, gloves or full-face shields can reduce your risk of injury.
• Use mechanical aids whenever possible. Instead of lifting or carrying heavy objects, use a conveyor belt, crane or forklift.
• Take regular breaks. Staying fresh and concentrated will help you avoid injury.
• Stay sober. Alcohol and drugs are an important factor in workplace accidents.
• Never work underneath a vehicle, unless it is properly jacked up. Make sure there is no risk of the vehicle crushing hands or feet or falling on top of the mechanic.
• Let the vehicle cool down before beginning any work. The engine, exhaust system, and radiator can be hot and cause skin burns. Additionally, the radiator coolant is pressurised when hot.
