    • The present participle is the "-ing"-form of a verb: taking, singing, giving, landing, ....

      1. You can use it to make relative clauses shorter. (verkürzter Relativsatz)

      The man who walks through the snow suddenly sees a rope.

      The man walking through the snow suddenly sees a rope.

      2. You can use it to add an additional information (also to make one sentence out of two). (Zusatzinformationen)

      He stopped and stared at the rope.

      He stopped, staring at the rope.

      3. You can use it to shorten sentences with "while" or when". (Zeit)

      When he saw the rope, he was very surprised.

      When seeing the rope, he was very surprised.

      4. You can use it to express a reason. (Grund)

      He was a curious person. So he pulled again.

      Being a curious person, he pulled again.
